How Travel Became My Favorite Form of Self-Care

There was a time when I thought a “successful” trip meant checking every box. Famous photo spots? Check. Must-try food? Check. Walk until your feet scream because “you’re only here once”? Double check.

But something changed.

It was in Santorini, actually. We were standing near the iconic blue domes. You know, the ones in every travel post. There was a line just to get a picture. Not to go in. Not to explore. Just to prove we were there.

I glanced at the line snaking around the corner for that Santorini photo….you know the one. Then I caught sight of a quiet little taverna down the hill. Empty tables. Actual shade. Zero selfie sticks. I turned to my husband and said, “We’re not standing in line. Let’s eat.”

We ended up splitting gyros, and listen, as a self-proclaimed picky eater, I was fully prepared to hate it. I didn’t. I inhaled it. Happily. That meal was the most unexpected highlight of the day.

We didn’t get the photo.

But we got a memory that felt like us. Sitting together, laughing over wine, watching people try to snap their “perfect shot” while we melted into our own rhythm. That felt like care. That felt like real travel.

I didn’t feel like a tourist anymore. I felt like a human who chose herself for once. That moment quietly shifted everything.

Now, when I plan travel {for myself or for my clients}, I don’t just think about where we’re going. I think about what it’s going to feel like. I don’t build trips that check boxes. I build experiences that let you breathe.

I ask:

What does your nervous system need?

What would it feel like to be cared for, not just entertained?

Where can we add softness instead of pressure?

Maybe it’s a slower pace. A room with a view you’ll actually enjoy. Time in the schedule for naps, snacks, doing nothing at all. Maybe it’s not cramming in the most, but creating space for the most you.

Because travel doesn’t have to be an escape.

It can be a coming home.

To your body. To your joy. To your breath.

And that is what I call self-care.
